DFJHS Honor Society

Diamond Fork Junior High School’s National Junior Honor Society has
been working on a service project since the beginning of January.
They have been cutting plastic grocery bags into strips and sending
them to mothers in Africa to crochet into baskets.  Honor Society
member Kiera Barton reported, “We fold regular white plastic grocery
bags a certain way and then cut them into 1-inch strips.  We roll them
up and are able to fit about fifty finished bags into a larger bag.
Afterwards, the two ladies in charge of the project pick them up from
the school and send them to Africa.”  Plastic and colored tablecloths
are also cut and rolled up for the baskets.  The ladies use them to
add color to their baskets so they are not completely white.

Another Honor Society member, Ashley Byrne discussed the effects of
the project when she said, “After the African moms crochet the
baskets, they send them back to the United States for us to sell them.
The money we make from the baskets is sent back to the moms and used
to help send their daughters to a boarding school.”  She explained
that the African girls have to walk a very long way to get to their
school, and it is not very safe.  The money that comes from the
baskets is also used for about a week’s supply of food for a normal
sized African family.  Congratulations Honors Society for success in
your excellent project.
