Diamond Fork Parents,
In the wildly famous series of Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling writes repeatedly about courage in its many different forms. In one instance, the character Neville Longbottom, a quiet and reserved young man, stands up to his friends when they plan to do something against the rules at school. When Professor Dumbledore, the school’s headmaster, finds out what Neville did, he profoundly exclaims, “There are all kinds of courage. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Additionally, J.R.R. Tolkien in a 1936 lecture identified courage as an insistence to do the right thing even in the face of certain defeat without promise or reward.
Life’s challenges can be intimidating, even frightening. Our own courage can take on many forms, and our students emulate this daily when they befriend the friendless or go out of their way to stand up against unfair treatment of a classmate. By practicing courage we learn to be better citizens at school and in our community. We gain strength to stand up for ourselves and others.

Food Drive: The first week of our food drive was a huge success! So far our school has raised 15,007 food items. We have only 4 school days of the food drive left! We are taking food and hygiene items, especially protein packed food such as chunky soups and peanut butter. We are accepting cash donations as well and have raised approximately $1,000 to date. All items and cash will be donated to Tabitha’s Way, our local Spanish Fork food pantry.
Earth Science Classes: Alfred Wegener's theory of Continental Drift was put on trial in the Earth Science classes last week. Students dressed up as various scientists and, while "under oath" on the witness stand, presented evidence for and against the idea of continental drift. Other characters in the play included a judge, a bailiff, a prosecutor, and Alfred Wegener himself. After the production, students wrote paragraphs arguing whether Wegener should be found innocent or guilty of proposing an idea without enough supporting evidence. A special thanks to Ms. Mandy Young and Ms. Janelle Hanks for encouraging active learning in their classes!

This seminar will be held on Wednesday, November 19th in the Nebo School District Board Room (350 S Main, Spanish Fork) at 7:00 p.m. (There is no charge for this seminar!)
Intramurals: Dodge ball begins today and students need to check the intramurals bulletin board daily for play times and dates. We had so many teams sign up that we had to re-schedule to fit in all teams.
Yearbooks: The last day to order yearbooks is coming upon us! You can pay $28.00 to Mrs. Harrison until December 5th. This is the only way your student will be guaranteed a yearbook on the last day of school. Avoid those last day tears. Be a part of history. Buy your yearbook now!
Nebo After School Clubs: There are many new after school clubs beginning this week! The classes run for a 10-week period and include: journalism, service learning, cooking, nail art, R&B rock band, paper crafting, Latin dancing, edible art, Magic the Gathering and a homework lab. Clubs meet on various weeknights and the cost is $5 per club. The complete schedule is under the 4-H tab at dfjhs.nebo.edu
Homework Lab: Students have the opportunity to receive additional help with their homework before or after school. The hours are Monday – Friday from 7:30am to 8:00am and 2:45pm to 3:15pm.
Math Homework Lab: The math department sponsors a homework and tutoring lab in Room 25 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week after school from 2:45pm to 4:15pm. There is a math teacher available to help students and students are welcome to complete other homework as well. There are computers available in the room. Students may use this time to work off any detention hours or tardies as well.
Book Orders: Book orders are available in the library now. This is a great way to round out your Christmas shopping at fantastic prices. See Mrs. Olson for order forms. She orders from multiple sources.

DID YOU KNOW…Because parents and students are so generous with food and hygiene supplies, DFJHS is the single largest contributor in Utah County to Tabitha’s Way! Our core value of compassion comes into play for this project as the service learning class organizes and manages this effort. It feels great to share our abundance with the community and ease the burdens of others.
