Diamond Fork Parents,

Daniel Jay Goleman, an author, psychologist, and science journalist eloquently stated, “True compassion means not only feeling another’s pain but also being moved to relieve it.” Compassion is one of DFJHS’ Core Values we live by each day. We admire people who have compassion and those who act on that value as they strive to make our school and community a better place. As educators at Diamond Fork Junior High School we aim to inspire our students to act compassionately toward others. This is an excellent time of year to teach our children to exercise compassion in all they do.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Accreditation Parent Survey: This year we are going through our first accreditation process since becoming a junior high, and the parent survey is one of many requirements we must do to gather data on our school.  If you have not filled out a survey, we would greatly appreciate it if you would take a few moments to do so. In order to complete an on-line version of the survey, go to http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/5277857. Please be assured that your responses will be anonymous. Thank you for your help in this area.

PTA Reflections: “The World Would Be A Better Place If…” How would you finish that phrase? This was the theme of the 2014-2015 PTA Reflections Contest. Reflections is a nationwide program that welcomes, free of charge, students from all grades and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Thousands of students reflect on a theme and create an original work in one of the following categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts.

Our students have a wide range of talent and displayed it this year in every category. We are proud of the work each student completed as it displays all of our core values of respect, compassion, courage, integrity and perseverance. We appreciate the effort the students put into their entries and the work of our outstanding PTA. Thank you all!

Food Drive: Diamond Fork is holding its annual food drive November 10th-21st. This year our school goal is to raise 25,000 food items to be donated to Tabitha's Way in Spanish Fork and to the Utah Food Bank. All non-perishable food items are needed to restock empty food bank shelves - especially canned meats, peanut butter and chunky meat soups. Also, items such as diapers, baby formula, soaps, shampoos, toilet paper, and other hygiene items are badly needed. Our school has a great tradition of generosity, and we look forward to another successful food drive November 10th-21st.

CCR Meetings: All of our guidance counselors are currently scheduling 8th and 9th grade students and their parents for their College and Career Readiness meetings. These are scheduled throughout the year and parents are expected to be a part of their child’s meeting. The counselors are flexible and can arrange the meeting time to work with a parent’s schedule. You will receive notice of a meeting time. If it does not work for you, please contact the Counseling Center to reschedule prior to the appointment.

Intramurals:  The seventh grade soccer intramural championship was held last Thursday!  It was a very close game.  Congratulations to team "Beast Mode", the seventh grade soccer champs.  Team "Charlie" finished in second place.  Congratulations also to the seventh grade sportsmanship winners, "Blobfish".  The Blobfish will receive a pizza party for exhibiting great sportsmanship the entire soccer season.  Thanks to all the seventh graders who played soccer!

CTE Rotations: The 7th grade CTE Introduction classes will rotate on Monday, November 17th. Please make sure your student has all of his or her work in to the teachers they currently have by this week. There will also be a career guest speaker in the CTE Introduction classes this week!

Yearbooks: A list of all students who purchased a yearbook has been posted in the office. Make sure your student checks the list. If your student did NOT purchase a yearbook during registration, now is the time to buy a souvenir of this school year. You can pay $28.00 to Mrs. Harrison until December 5th.  This is the only way your student will be guaranteed a yearbook on the last day of school. Avoid those last day tears. Be a part of history.  Buy your yearbook now!

Nebo After School Clubs:  New afterschool clubs starting this week. Students can sign up at any time. Students can get a registration form in the office. If they have already been enrolled in an after school club this year they will need to fill out only the half sheet enrollment forms.

HOPE Squad: All secondary schools in Nebo School District are required to implement a HOPE squad. Their mission is to reduce the number of youth suicides in the state of Utah by providing education, training, and expertise in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. The school-based, peer-to-peer training and support provided through the HOPE Squad program is an important element in preventing youth suicide. School staff and administration also contribute greatly to prevention efforts when well-trained in prevention and intervention procedures. Selected HOPE squad student members went through a training last week and will continue to work closely with the counseling office throughout the year.

SPORTS

Wrestling: Coach Charles began practices for the wrestling team on Thursday, November 6th.

Swim: Both MMHS and SFHS participated in a swim meet at Provo last Friday. The SFHS boys team beat the MMHS boys team and our own Elxys Thomas took 4th in the 100 meter butterfly! Great job athletes!

INTRAMURAL DODGE BALL SIGN-UPS ARE THIS WEEK! All students are invited to play and teams need to have fifteen participants. Students need to see Mr. Cook for more details.
